My biggest issue is that these cosmetic sales have destroyed in-game art. POE for example, most of the Grinch Christmas Funny Shirt in contrast I will get this gear is extremely generic, unless its MTX appearances. You can play the entire game and look like you never left act 1 D2, but for 20 bucks you can look like you’re wearing enchanted platemail from level 1 to max. That intentional neutering of the game art for people that don’t buy MTX is a drain on the visual experience of video games. It won’t though, because gamers have less impulse control than a coked up manic BPD episode and will buy accelerated tier in massive droves while complaining about predatory monetization. Maybe if you lot stopped preordering everything regardless of how abysmally the launch goes, no matter how much content got cut to be sold as “add ons”, how many “sorry we fucked up again” cyberpunk-style apology tweets, and making thinks like loot boxes billion dollar revenue streams, the industry wouldn’t be so directly incentivized to make the standard of modern gaming a barely-functional experience with extremely robust e-shops.

100% this. There are so many great games nowadays that it should be obvious that Blizzard games with predatory monetising should be avoided. When we had Diablo 2, all we had was Diablo 2. Grinding it all the Grinch Christmas Funny Shirt in contrast I will get this time was OK. But nowadays? Try the Dark Souls franchise, Nioh games, open up a list of Game Awards indie nominations, check those out. If people stopped clinging to the nostalgia of games like Diablo, and most importantly, stopped paying for the microtransactions, we’d see less of these techniques applied. But that won’t happen. So just avoid them. This isn’t a “developers can’t get paid unless they get thousands of dollars from the whales 🙁 ” thing. This is a “how can our executives make even more millions of dollars” thing.
