Just him and a pistol with 17 rounds, and he made his stand knowing that if the mob decided to push forward there was nothing stopping them from ripping him limb from limb. I wonder if he knew help was on the way, tactical officers with body armor and rifles showed up just seconds after Babbit got shot. If things changed even a little bit, it easily could have turned into many more dead bodies, or no dead bodies, depending on the temperament of the cops who showed up. In the seconds it took them to get there, the bulk of the mob had run away.

Actually, the Greater Western Sydney Christmas Apron Eco Shirt and by the same token and officer who shot Babbitt wasn’t alone if you see the videos. There were 4 or 5 officers standing behind a credenza or bookcase they had pushed against the doors to keep them from opening inward, pointing guns at the mob, yelling at the mob to stop breaking in or they’d shoot. The one one capitol officer took the shot as Babbitt was hoisted up to go through broken door window. The fact that only officer shot showed the restraint of the officers, restraint we don’t usually see from street police who tend to all start shooting once one shoots. Babbitt was hit once (I believe) and fell backwards; the capitol officers waited to see if that was enough to keep the mob at bay. While any death is regrettable even if provoked, the cap police did what had to be done without panic even though they could see the mob had clubs and other weapons and knew there was rioting all over the Capitol. Given the circumstances, all 4 or 5 could have opened fire as soon as the window was broken as they own lives were then in danger as well as the Congressmembers still fleeing behind them, but they showed restraint in the face of chaos.
