These parents were born in the 80s. They didn’t have physical punishment when they were in school. Bribery was no longer common either for this generation. It was discussed in many news articles that these are not the reasons. Physical punishment in schools didn’t become illegal until 2012. So parents who were born in the 80s would have most likely experienced it either themselves or have seen other students get punished physically. What do u mean Im a Korean born in the early 90s and we had these shit going on until the early 2010s including the bribes.

They only care if their kids “win” in society. Anything that stands in the Gorky Park Poster Shirt also I will do this way (except the kids own behavior) is the enemy. I guess my next question is what caused/why has Korean parenting changed to be like this now? What I mean is, the hyper competitivness isnt anything really new nor is the heavy desire to have their kids be seen as “winning” in society. But just like how the kids “winning” reflects positively on the parents, doesn’t the kid misbehaving in school and to teachers also reflect poorly on the parents? At least, that’s how I and other Korean Americans were basically taught by our parents. Do parents in Korea just not care anymore that their children’s misbehavior also reflects poorly on them as parents? Do other parents not judge and stigmatize those kinds of parents and children? Or has the need to win or be seen as winning really overshadowed everything else that much? I suppose that answers my question, I just find it really jarring to say the least.
