It has taken 20 years but I have learned, eventually, to recognise those kinds of situations, listen actively, to prompt and to reflect, but never to suggest unless she actively indicates she needs ideas. Doesn’t always work and I sometimes misread signals, sometimes forget. But we have a kind of equilibrium. Have to say though, if she’d ever said “I just want to vent” it would be a pretty damn useful signal for my poor addled mind to interpret! We’ve come up with a subtle signal for times when she’s just looking to vent rather than seeking a solution. If I start to act on something she’s venting about, she’ll simply hold my hand. This gesture communicates to me that she’s not trying to guilt me into action, but rather needs to express her feelings and be heard I think something important is that you said “it feels like I’m not being listened to” and her immediate launch into action feels “invalidating” to you. It seems like you two may not be communicating effectively here. she is unable to understand that when you are venting your frustration it is not to trigger a response but to release your frustration. Could this be because she comes from a neglectful family and she is trying to (over)compensate for that with you by showing attention and immediately acting? She hears your frustration and wants to make it better and doesn’t realize that to make it better, you just need to release your feelings. We often try to “love” someone by giving them what we want/need and not what they want/need. I would try to explain to her that your needs are different from hers and that when you say a word…potato…she must sit in a chair, eyes on you, hands in her lap and listen. The only words she can say in the potato time is “Yes” or “I understand” or some variation of that. Potato time ends with a warm embrace and then you get 5 minutes to collect yourself. Something like that maybe. Spell it out in clear and plain words. She obviously wants to support you.
