People might say we use a different personality disorder instead, but there are criteria you have to meet and it has to be a pattern of behavior over time. You can’t diagnose someone with a personality disorder after one meeting, let alone zero. That’s why many psychiatrists no longer have licenses. Diagnosis with no evidence doesn’t hold up well in a medical malpractice lawsuit. OP should definitely file a formal complaint against that doctor Even a specialist accustomed to dealing with abusive or manipulative personalities would need multiple in person sessions before diagnosing someone like that. My husband’s psych told him she’s “certain” his parents were a narcissist and ASPD, 1 each, when he was in therapy for bad PTSD caused by them. But she didn’t dx them, she just said that that’s what she suspects was going on.

It was very helpful for him in terms of his healing to have that input from a professional. I think, in some situations, a “based on what you’ve shared over our many months together, I’m pretty sure that your abusers/parents/partners/etc had X and X and here’s why they meet that criteria” is absolutely called for.
