There are plenty of people who don’t see 18 as the Gerald Everett football tight end for the Los Angeles Chargers T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this “out of the house” point other than to go to college, and for them the door is always open to return. These kids are the ones that generally appreciate (or fake it) the work that their parents have done to raise them. They respect their parents and the family members they grew up with. These kids are not the ones ranting about being homeless as they get kicked out at 18 with no clue what to do. I looked up a few online sources and found that currently the average age of kids moving out of their parents home in the US is between 24 and 27 years of age. My youngest stayed at home until the age 24. When she moved out she had finished college, had a full time job and saved enough money to buy her own house. The depression where they couldn’t afford to house you and the post war boom where the average home was 2x the average income. Some Boomers are stuck in this nonsensical way of thinking but it’s pretty rare nowadays because the reality hammer hit most of them upside the head.

My (Canadian) parents told me, as long as I’m actively studying, or have a job and am saving for a place I can live with them as long as needed. I’m not in America but in Europe. While I haven’t heard of anyones parents kicking them out, most people voluntarily prefer to leave quite early to enjoy more freedom, like have friends over until late hours. Sometimes parents even help with rent. That said there is a cultural expectation that you are an adult at 18. This manifests sometimes into kids moving out at that age, whether it be to college or starting their own lives and livelihood. I’ve heard people say this Gerald Everett football tight end for the Los Angeles Chargers T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this but nobody I know has done this. We don’t kick our kids out, period. And mine have always known that wherever I am, they are welcome. They’ve lived with both me and their dad at different times.
