Good morning all, I’m looking for some advice. Been living in Hanoi (Westlake) for multiple years now and find myself growing ever tired of the Funny Snoopy Charlie Brown Live Well Love Much Laugh Often Shirt in other words I will buy this same foreigners in the same bars. I feel like I’m not making the opportunity of a vibrant city filled with cool people nearly enough. My Vietnamese is so-so, but on conversation level if there is a bit of English the other way. My question: Which venues/bars would you recommend for 9pm-3am on a Friday or Saturday night that would be a hang out hub for Vietnamese young adults? Students, post-graduates that like to party..Young adults don’t have the money to go to pub/bar. 100k VND per drink is way too much for any students to enjoy. When I was a student, 15 years ago, I often bought cheap rice alcohol (20k VND per litre) and drank it with my friends on the street. Sometimes we had some extra money, we would all chip in for a dish of “củ đậu” (20k per dish). Nowadays you can see young students drinking alcohol outside of Circle K, so I guess things is not much different from my time. Of course, foreigners are welcome to sit on the street and strike a conversation with us. Maybe you can go to a local bia hơi place if you want a decent meal. But I don’t think you can find a bar in Hanoi for normal young adults.

In my experience there are plenty of near-Graduates/Young professionals that will go out more for the Funny Snoopy Charlie Brown Live Well Love Much Laugh Often Shirt in other words I will buy this experience than the harsh drinking that often happens in Western Culture. Perhaps, is there a particular location that Non-Expat Hanoi residents would go more than other places, on the occasion they would go out? Most young vietnamese don’t have the time or money to go out to bar, only people from rich family really go to bar and such (or for other purpose). The average vietnamese would hang out with their friend at a local beer garden or infront of a circle K. If you want to make some vietnamese friends, try facebook group that focus on social life and of something you interested. You might able to make some friends there and expand your friends group. I mainly drink at The Republic in west lake since my friend work there, otherwise no real reason to go to bar for vietnamese when most of us prefer street side stall or beer garden.
