I traveled on Thanksgiving and had quite an argument with security about bringing mashed potatoes and stuffing and gravy through. Finally boarded the plane and got to my destination with everything intact. Worms! I keep a vermicomposting box and was able to snag a secondhand one for my mom for Christmas last year. Taking it apart and transporting the box wasn’t hard, it was figuring out how to transport live worms. They would get too cold if I checked them so they had to go in my carry-on luggage. My country has restrictions on bringing certain worms into the country but I couldn’t figure out if that applied to flying within the country. Emailing the Air Transport Security Authority just got me a response linking to their pet policy I actually got the most useful information by connecting with them on Facebook. Apparently the worms aren’t so much a problem as their castings or soil, and I was limited to containers of 350mL of soil. So I got some 350mL plastic containers, drilled as many breathing holes as I could, and packed them with worms, castings and shredded paper. I tried to bring as many worm eggs as I could find but that was not many, so I just brought whole worms. Some did not survive the journey alas, and those that did were crowded around the breathing holes when I finally took them out, the poor things. But it has been over a year now and my mom’s vermicomposting box is going strong!
