At the Funny Disney Villains Cruella De Vil Perfectly Wretched T-shirt and by the same token and time of our Zoom meeting, only a few weeks had passed since Erickson’s initial cold-call. The process of bringing her onto the team was quick and painless, not at all “transactional” like sponsorships and ambassadorships tend to be. “When I first talked to Sage, I was skeptical,” adds Outerknown CEO Mark Walker. “I expected this to just be another one of those conversations about paying ‘X amount’ to wear our stuff, and you’ll do three appearances a year, and that’s the relationship. But this was very different. Sage lives and breathes this idea of what Outerknown is, which is about travel and the planet and sustainability, and her vibe was a match, too.”

Beyond simply wearing and endorsing Outerknown’s products, Erickson is taking on a leadership role at the Funny Disney Villains Cruella De Vil Perfectly Wretched T-shirt and by the same token and company. She’ll be invited to every meeting, will learn from its sustainability team, and will weigh in on designs and new categories. “Often companies will promise these opportunities to design, or there will be an agreement [to do more], but really they’re just sending you three color swatches to choose from, and you don’t know where the fabric came from or how it was made,” she says. “But this is much more interactive and authentic to my beliefs. They’ve made me feel like my voice matters, and to be honored in that way has been really different.”
