I mean, this is a valid point in linguistics, the Funny damn right i am a ABBA fan now and forever signature shirt in contrast I will get this inherent ineffectiveness of logographic systems, but….. not quite phrased like that. So close, and yet still so wrong. The problem is phonetical vs non-phonetical. So long you derive from non-phonetical alphabet, you’re set for trouble. It’s just impossible to “settle” chinese, since it’s alive and evolving (new things are invented and words are needed for it). In the other hand, a phonetical system will set for the minimum amount of sounds a human can vocalize. If you feel courageous instead of symbolize single letters, you can go to symbolyze single sylabes (japan), wich about double or triple the amount of characters but that’s all. If you settle for symbols as words, there’s absolute no limit in the number of symbols you are getting into. In fact, the first chinese dictionary already have 9.000 characters and its before Christ walked the Earth. Any modern chinese dictionary will surpass 100.000 characters and growing. That’s just not practical. It will probably surprise you that any civilization that tried pictograms, at some point had to abandon it for something actually manageable. Egypt hierogyphs -> Domotic. Chinese Characters -> Korean Hanwa. Japan seriously tried to get rid of Chinese Kanji since at least 1900 but in the end couldn’t since it would wipe it’s own history, and settled for around 2.000, anything else that falls outside them it’s done in hiragana and katakana wich are around 80 each and are pure phonetical. And even China considered to abandon symbols and settle for something simpler but there was even stronger arguments against and decided not to.

So the Funny damn right i am a ABBA fan now and forever signature shirt in contrast I will get this best they could come up with was to downsize with “Simplified Chinese”, but in the long run it’s impossible. Japan are stuck with a limited set that leads to multiple readings for any kanji, and China are stuck with an ever evolving set of an already unmanageable number of kanji. Can Chinese be used in modern context and be flexible? Yes. But that’s not the question, the question is: Why anybody else (except nerds) away from the region bother? Latin is 28 letters, some less alternates for Caps (much are the same but bigger), 10 digits and the word meaning are English. The selling points of English are just two: 1. it’s easy. which leads to 2. it’s universal. That’s something Chinese or Japanese could never do because even if Chinese is “universal” in the asian region, Chinese or downsized Japanese are pure hell to learn (that’s what motivated Korea to remade it’s writting, Japanese to restrict the set, and China to come up with simplified). Specially if your mother tongue was a very-small-latin-inspired-alphabet based one.
