Hinman isn’t the Funny Aerosmith Back Shirt and I love this only Texan who’s been forced to place more trust in grassroots methods of community protection than in top-down governmental aid. “It feels like we’re being abandoned, again, by leadership that refuses to do the bare minimum to protect the people who live here,” says Emma Decker, 29, a resident of Georgetown, Texas. “I’m in awe of local leadership, the Austin council members who worked hand in hand with mutual aid groups to get food and water to people without electricity or water for a week, and all of the volunteers who made it happen. But I just don’t know how sustainable it is to expect grassroots movements and volunteer orgs to compensate for high-level greed and incompetence. And they shouldn’t have to, you know?”

For many Texans, the Funny Aerosmith Back Shirt and I love this lack of COVID-19 oversight from the state’s highest office feels like yet another betrayal of public trust. Katherine Trakhtenbroit, 36, a Houston resident, says that her initial sense of hope around the pandemic has been completely extinguished by Abbott’s reopening. “I was hopeful my children could do summer camp—that we would have numbers under control by May,” says Trakhtenbroit, “but now I just hope we don’t experience another surge, compounding the tragedy of last week’s freeze.”
