When I travel to other countries I always ask first if I can speak English with the Frog king eat the rich shirt and by the same token and person, just because in my experience it’s rude to just start blurting things in a language that’s not local. This is why I generally wouldn’t ask first (dépendant on location and situation, of course). I think people underestimate the level of English fluency in Europe, especially amongst younger people. I traveled around Europe for some conferences earlier in the year. In Belgium, the day I arrived from Amsterdam, I instinctively went up to someone and asked a question in English (since basically everyone in Amsterdam speaks a good amount of English). The guy had a blank stare and internally I went “shit, I assumed!”, so I apologised and asked him “spreekt u Engels?”. He responded “Yeah, of course”, in a kind of miffed way, I repeated my question in English again and he answered it lol. A couple of weeks ago I transfered via Brussels airport and we weren’t sure if we needed to retrieve our luggage and re-check it, because of a check in agent in Tokyo insisting we had to do so, but us doubting it, because that’s not common in Europe. To our surprise the separation by transfer and baggage claim came super quick, before any service desk, so we asked the agent standing there, separating the two groups. English right away, because we are in an international airport. That girl stared at us blankly. All she could say was “Transfer right, baggage claim left!”

My boyfriend is from Germany, and whenever I say I feel bad for his friends having to use English around me, or if I feel uncomfortable trying to do something in German, he says “everyone is supposed to know English here. They all took it in school. If they don’t, then they should be kinda embarrassed.” So anyways, that’s his take on the Frog king eat the rich shirt and by the same token and matter lol My experience in Germany was different tbh, outside of Berlin and Munich, there was a sizeable amount of ppl that barely knew any English or none at all, except for young people, so I always asked if they knew English before speaking When I hit up major Western European cities (London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, and some day trips elsewhere) during a 3-week trip, a 20-something in Berlin working a mall food stand was the only person I spoke to on the entire trip who didn’t speak English. Unfortunately German was the language I was least prepared to attempt, but we got by with hand signals. I was surprised because he was definitely young enough to have been required to take English if he went to public school in Germany. Almost everyone you see in Germany nowadays was required to take English in school, besides older people from the GDR. But people are also required to take maths and physics and still not everyone is good at that either.
