Idk when you were here but most of the Four More Years Biden Stars President Election T-Shirt it is in the first place but turrets are gone now. I used to have turrets at my old compound too but they disappeared around 2016 ish or so A girl I knew from Canada lived out there when her dad went there for work. Her house was a big concrete compound lol. She had to use a VPN to access most sites, because the government blocks everything. Even rabb.it was blocked, if anyone remembers that site. Funny story is the maid they had working for them there randomly ran away one day and got asylum in the UK I believe. My uncle lives im one of them. I could never do it. Any country that still publicly beheads people and crucifies the bodies is not a country I want anything to do with. My old friend from high school lived in one of places for a couple years. She met her now Saudi husband at a prestigious university. The hoops she had to go through to marry him from the Saudi and US government was ridiculous. They now live here in the USA. 15-20 years ago I worked on the saudi-aramco retirement plans. Most of the guys would call in just to talk about their pension calculation because they had millions in their retirement accounts but not a whole bunch of entertainment to occupy their time. When The Kingdom came out I was like- oh shoot! it’s the pension guys! UAE, Saudi, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar and several other countries all have large American expat communities, with a lot of oil, state department, military, journalists, educators, and finance workers. They’re not all walled off but are often in insulated expat neighborhoods and the schools and larger employer campuses are often walled off campuses. My parents lived there for years (Americans). They would make their own liquor and wine with their neighbors, Saudi nationals were not allowed inside the compounds. They met a lot of nice people from all over the Middle East + SE Asia but overall hated their life there and left. Companies would offer outrageous salaries to come back to my father, but he declined because of the overall poor quality of life and isolation the 18’ barbed wire fences brought.

I grew up in Riyadh from 1988-1994, ages 8-14. My dad is a doctor and we lived on the Four More Years Biden Stars President Election T-Shirt it is in the first place but hospital housing compound. The 80s to the mid-90s was honestly an idyllic time for expats living in Saudi Arabia. We lived in a huge walled-in housing complex with kids from all over the world and there were no safety concerns whatsoever. Every night after school we would have pickup basketball games, or rollerblade around the compound, or hang at the pool, or play compound-wide games of manhunt. The American school in Riyadh was comparable to the best public schools in North America. There was a large and vibrant expatriate community that existed largely in parallel to Saudi culture, though there was plenty of intermingling between the two on a day-to-day basis. The pay was generous and tax-free and we took advantage of the proximity to amazing travel locations we otherwise never would have been able to go to – ski trips to Switzerland and Austria, safaris in Kenya, beach vacations in Thailand. Hell, in ninth grade you could choose between a class trip to Turkey or Nepal. I made some lifelong friends and was exposed to cultures I never would have been exposed to. I truly look back on those years with fondness. Happy if anyone wants to AMA me about it.
