The issue isn’t that they couldn’t speak English though, it is that they dismissed the Fire John Ballein shirt and by the same token and emergency completely and hung up on someone potentially in immediate danger. I went to greece years ago for school, we were told in some areas, basically not Athens, if have an emergency to figure it out or go find a local as emegency services would speak with us. This number can be used throughout Europe and Switzerland to connect with local authorities and most importantly, an operator who speaks your language! Weird since both my cousins born in the late 70s and early 80s were taught english in school starting when they were kids. I will say my dad and his siblings are all from northern italy in a small mountain town so maybe it’s different in the southern regions.

We learn English in school for 13 years, plus some extra classes while you’re in university. But about the Fire John Ballein shirt and by the same token and quality or the interest students have in it…. In high school we were 22 people jn one class, only 5/6 or as were able to read and write decently in English on our last day of school. Did you call 112, the european emergency number ? Apparently they’re supposed to cover all kind of emergencies in all of Europe, with somebody that speaks your language Fires are very common in the summer there and they usually let them burn out unless they are near homes. I don’t think they ignored you…it’s just not worth chasing down every fire there since there’s probably one daily. I’m sure if it was near a town they would have sent firefighters. I’ve seen so many fires in that region – they usually last 30 min then run out of fuel. They often start “controlled burns” for agricultural reasons in Calabria. I don’t know that that’s what was going on here but I figured it’s worth mentioning.
