She picked up the Fight For Those Without Your Privilege Shirt and by the same token and squirrels (affectionately named Olga, Masha, and Irina after Chekhov’s Three Sisters) on San Francisco’s infamously apocalyptic orange day. She and her husband fed them every two hours for ten weeks, and they slept in an old parrot cage in the kitchen (the squirrels, not Gretchen and her husband). “You’d walk by the cage to get something out of the refrigerator, and half an hour later you’d still be there looking at them,” Gretchen told me.

“My husband cried all the Fight For Those Without Your Privilege Shirt and by the same token and way over to San Francisco when we were taking them back.” She lifted her chardonnay glass. “Some abandonment issues there.” Vardit, who wears gold eye-shadow and uses the word “tush” in a motherly way, calls herself an “Upper West Side girl.” Her salon has become a cult favorite among the unsurprisingly hyperactive Upper West Side Nextdoor community. Uptowners who can no longer venture the 90 blocks to their shiny Soho stylists (we’re talking Frederic Fekkai and Sacha & Olivier loyalists) are swarming Vardit’s basement salon on West 102st St.
