The skull and crossbones motif is an archetypal symbol of death that has transcended cultures and epochs. In ancient civilizations, skulls were often used as religious symbols, representing both the cycle of life and death and the power of ancestors. In medieval Europe, the skull and crossbones became associated with piracy and poison, while in modern times it has been adopted by the punk subculture.
