Zoology student here, I actually asked this to my professors at university while we were talking about the Everybody has an addiction mine just happens to be the O’jays shirt Also,I will get this praying mantis and was told that they don’t actually normally kill the male after breeding, the only documented cases of this were due to human intervention agitating the female causing her to feel threatened and kill the male, in natural conditions it is far less common or doesn’t occur at all. This is just what I learnt from a conversation with my professor who has done research with insects in the past so I don’t actually have any studies to back it up. I would also add that in many spider species where it is believed the female will kill the male after (jumping spider, black widow) the male doesnt actually intend for this to be the end result and will actively try to evade death In the case of jumping spiders it can often be a mistake on part of the male. They are so eager to court they often do it to the wrong species of female jumping spider which, apparently, pisses the females off to no end. There are some amusing videos of male jumping spiders waving at a female from their hiding spot under a leaf and only attempt to come out and dance when they have assessed she has not shown aggression. We can use the case of the anglerfish where the attaches itself to the much, much larger female and then is basically absorbed by the female. Effectively killing the male. From an evolutionary standpoint, he’s not dead because he continues to provide sperm… He becomes a sperm producing parasite though. Captive mantises will often kill and eat the make after mating but in the wild he at least has a chance to get away if she tries. That makes a lot of sense. A mouse will eat its children if it feels the nest is under attack. So a big fecking giant human could trigger the same sort of effect in mating. Perhaps its to consume as much energy as possible to stand a chance when it has to flee under pregnancy, I dunno. I think we’re anthropomorphising here quite a lot. It’s simply different strategies. There’s a lot of different tactics to try to pass on genes, many of which are perfectly successful. In this case reproduction starts, as well as a meal for the party which then has to finish off the job of reproduction. It works in the case of these animals for a few reasons, mainly that they go for the quantity of quality strategy of having children, having as many as possible hoping that some survive, rather than looking after them. And secondly that the females are bigger than the males so there’s no disadvantage to the female of trying to eat them, as they pose no danger to them when they try to fight back. In species with high competition for mating, there isn’t much guarantee that a male will survive to mate again. Thus, males that were eaten might have had more surviving offspring, since the meal they provided their mate provided her a significant advantage.
