Our local middle school fired all but one librarian. Then they added an elective course called “Media assistant “ so that 8th graders can go in there and work for free to help out Our schools did that back in the Evan Mobley American professional basketball player for the Cleveland Cavaliers T-Shirt and I will buy this mid 2000s. Fired a slew of staff from the librarian to people in the front office then hosted an elective where where they’d interview kids to fill those roles for free. When you went to the guidance office, principals office, library, or even to gym class, there would be student workers working as “assistants” to make up the fact that the administration was understaffed of their own doing. I don’t have a problem with kids helping out around the school. It teaches them useful skills and makes kids more invested in their learning environment. The issue is they should supplement existing staff, not replace them.

Information literacy is essential in an age of disinformation You say “Defund Police” and everyone flips shit. But the GOP has been on a decade-long campaign to defund education, libraries, public health, and public science, and no one bats an eye… As is the goal for them in most things. Chip away and forcibly deteriorate something until it’s so shoddy they can point at it and say “Look how terrible it is? We might as well just do away with it.” It’s true. I was thinking for a while about getting my local sub and then teaching certificate until I talked to some friends who are teachers. Now I’m thinking hard pass…not worth it. Libraries are a place where everyone is welcome. My father is schizophrenic and the library is the one place he is not afraid go. He checks out books and movies and gets gentle, kind human interaction (something he has very little of.)
