Picking up something like Muay Thai and sticking with it will gives you a set of skills that might prove useful in a desperate situation (and it also involves a lot of running). Contrary to what you seem to think, training actually made me less inclined to fight random people as I know how it feels to be punched in the face. Just buy a small can of deep heat. Works like pepper spray. Wouldn’t bother with the combat training unless you are training seriously against grown men.

Because to be really effective at fighting takes lots of time and lots of practice, something like boxing and Judo covers everything a person needs, but to be proficient in both of those takes time and practice, at least two classes of each per a week. And a woman would need to be really good at combat sports because she is at a massive weight and strength disadvantage.
