And that’s the Ennis high school alumni shirt and I love this problem with reactionaries like the American conservative. They don’t see it as, “Kid sees people like him being accepted so he feels safe to come out”, they see “Kid sees rainbows and gay people on TV, so now he feels he has to be gay to fit in.” I grew up having to fit in with straight society, and it fucked me up. Even after finding my tribe and spending the last 25 years surrounded by a social network of LGBTQA+ people, a lot of internalized trauma and even internalized homophobia still lingers with me. I really wish it wasn’t until I was in my 20s that I started seeing gay people being visible and accepted in everyday society, and no kid should have to spend their formative years thinking they’re an outcast and alone because of who they are. That’s conservatives for you. They believe if you don’t see it, it doesn’t exist. Hence the “I don’t see color” they love to use.

That was my experience as well. I got to college, met real life gay people who kissed other boys and I was like It might push more people to come out, and come out earlier. Also, gays are more visible, which of course translates in their mind as “more gays”. Yes, the thing is so many shows up through the 90s leaned on homosexuality as a punch line for their jokes. Like thats what she said jokes but totally unironically. Just watch friends, several jokes like that per episode. So now, people who grew up on that, they cannot see a gay tv character without focusing on it. They see the gay character walk into the scene and immediately think oh my god thats the gay one hahahahaha. They can’t imagine a tv show where gayness is just a small perhaps insignificant piece of a characters background, like so and so grew up in cleveland worked in plastics and is gay. The gay part dominates their view of the character, they cannot ignore it because for decades and decades going back to the 50s at least, like one in four jokes on TV just used plain homosexuality as a punch line. Like Lenny and Moe couldn’t have been gay on the Simpsons because that would have become the entirety of the characters in viewer’s minds, even if they never wrote any scenes differently.
