Basically these less valuable mares get pregnant from normal horses, have their foal, it gets taken from them, and then they are given the foal of a valuable mate and stallion to raise so the mare can become pregnant again. It’s actually perfectly normal to breed a mare who is nursing a foal; usually the foal is briefly separated from mom so she can go on her date. Nursing a foal doesn’t hinder a mare’s fertility. I’m not saying the use of nurse mares is unproblematic, but I’m aware there’s been a false narrative going around the internet for a few years portraying it as the ‘norm’ instead of an emergency scenario. For what it’s worth, this is something that’s slowly getting better as farms are more transparent about use of nurse mares when needed, and make efforts to make sure nurse mare foals find homes and breed them so they are desirable horses in their own right. There’s also been work done trying to find ways induce lactation in mares without breeding her; I suspect if a way is found that is quick and cheap (it can be done now but takes weeks, time you may not have if you have a fragile orphaned foal), breeding nurse mares will go away.

It’s cut-throat but advertises itself as fun and fair. I worked in the top of several equine disciplines and very rarely saw anything that reflected humane handling of performance horses. This happens in English and western disciplines on low and high level circuits- any time I’ve tried to speak out I get threats of defamation lawsuits or worse.
