Their music, art, and literature was revered and touted and visible in a way women’s wasn’t. Their voices and opinions were important, they were in positions of authority. So the message I got was that men had their rightful place as visible, active contributors to society. Women were not really valuable beyond being attractive to men, and their role as a wife and mother. If they did “man things” they had to be pretty while they did it, or they were just dabbling and might be “good at it for a girl”. Or they were seen as proxy men (like female politicians), and given legitimacy that way. It took a long time, and reading history, and consuming art made by women, and societal changes, for me to see anything feminine as valuable or legitimate. And I’m a woman.

Visible gender differences are not inherently bad. The way that society sees them and values them can be. Coming on Reddit is sometimes depressing, because any post where a woman’s face or body is visible attracts a flood of comments about her face and body, no matter what she’s doing, especially, but not only, if she’s young and attractive. If she’s not young and attractive then she gets disgust comments. That doesn’t usually happen for men. It makes me want to hide my gender and appearance so that I won’t be judged on it. It feels so freeing to not have to deal with randoms DMing me with dick pics, gamers making sexist remarks, and doubting my ability/competence in game for just existing as a woman in an online game chat, but only when they lack the context that they are talking to a woman. It sets a precedent and expectation that all women/girls do X (are meticulous, mean when arguing, better at cleaning etc) and all men/boys do X (are strong, don’t cry, are lazy etc) and then when said gender doesn’t match those expectations, the other person is offended/angry/disappointed and the person being held to those expectations feels bad (like they’re not a true man or woman, like they let someone down, like a freak etc).
