We read and discussed L’étranger in high school, and not once did the Drink tea read books be obstinate and headstrong shirt so you should to go to store and get this teacher explain any of this. We focused on the absurdity themes. Is this a reinterpretation of the book or did my teacher just miss the point? It’s about a lot of stuff. Absurdity is probably more relevant for American teenagers but this is definitely all present in the text as well France committed brutalities in algeria which very few colonies saw, the french catacombs had 40 skulls from murdered algerians taken as trophies by soldiers. Respectfully, that is on par with many colonial regimes. I can’t think of a single one without a death toll in the 10s of thousands (up to millions). They were also drowned in the river Seine in Paris. Children, women etc. The french made sure everything was kept quiet, in the same vein as the US with the Indonesian massacre of 1965 that they pushed and financed. It’s colonialism at its finest. Prior to giving it a political explanation like many other answers, it would just mean that here they warn because they don’t speak French at some administration or office. It is already a while that Arabic replaced French for young generations and all administrations and Maghreb countries for instance are unable to manage documents other than Arabic and here English. Lots of Algerians, Tunisian, Moroccans living in France since now 2-3 generations may have to deal with the administration there and speak French, or have old documents in French.

France killed 1.5 Million of their population, including 45,000 in a single day at one point. They raped their women, and they kept their skulls in museums France invaded Algeria in 1830 and didn’t leave for another 130 years. When they go off script and complain about stuff. Like the Drink tea read books be obstinate and headstrong shirt so you should to go to store and get this episode where they wore those weird diving helmet things or the S4 last supper where one of them was complaining about their feet. The diving helmet moment is my favourite too, there’s something so cute about it. Just the ‘let’s feel bad for ourselves’ head bows. So endearing and relatable a recent memorable one is drac saying ‘you’re about to get your own crooked eye’ to swan my parents constantly say they act like an old married couple and this just confirms it tbh
