It allows you to type faster, for longer periods, and without looking at the keys. But regardless, OP outlined a lot of serious problems with their students’ skills, and this was just one of them. I agree with OP that people should learn to type properly, but a lot of these points are more alarming and concerning than their inability to type. I’m just picturing the admin assistants of the future hunched over keyboards and tapping away with only their index fingers like a corporate velociraptor. I teach in Asia so most still have decent typing skills (lots of computer use and familiarity at home) but the few who don’t average around 60-70. Using all fingers correctly most students average around 90-110 WPM. I average around 120 while touch typing and I have 2 students in Grade 10 who average 130-140.

Because in my experience this would just lead to more teacher bashing and people not really caring. It’s shameful to say but students need to hit rock bottom like embarrassing nationwide levels. Levels that suddenly governments are concerned about their image. That it gets better. Thirty years ago for me. I went to a rather expensive private school that prided itself on being better than the public schools and I was legitimately the only person in my class that could read well. Pretty much everyone else struggled to read outloud or would have to use their finger so they didn’t lose their place. When I was a senior I was the only person in my class that knew what a syllable was or how to count them. I’m actually pretty awful at math as an adult and I still graduated with the second highest math scores.
