Idk. I see this mostly from white Americans. I’m Mexican so we tend to stick together (grandparents, parents, kids/ siblings) we all pretty much live together. It’s mostly the Don’t Piss Off Old People the Older We Get the Less Life in Prison T-Shirt in addition I really love this older generation that have this idea that once you are grown you have to make your own way. Most of them are well established or established enough that they don’t have to worry about basics like rent, food, or utilities and think that an 18 year old will be able to support themselves with their job like they were able to do 30/ 40 years ago when things were much cheaper. They either don’t care about their kids or can’t see that times have changed and what was possible back in the day isn’t now. I didn’t realize this was even an American stereotype. I’m American, I went to college at 18 but over the years I moved in and out of their house and I know quite a few others who stayed with their folks like OP.

It’s an absolute ridiculous belief that because it happened to me, and I turned out fine I have to do it to my kids. As a parent in today’s world my entire plan is to set my children up for as much success as I can. It’s unfortunately taking my time away from now as children, but hopefully as impressionable teens and young adults I’ll be at their disposal. I left home at 18 to go to school, but never moved back. I had the Don’t Piss Off Old People the Older We Get the Less Life in Prison T-Shirt in addition I really love this full support of my family during that time though, they paid my rent, although it was dirt cheap, like $300 / month. I was fully self sufficient by 23. But me leaving was on me, I wasn’t kicked out at all. My brother went to a local college and stayed at home, but it was basically the same for him, he was out on his own by 23 or 24, he was ready. Many (most?) don’t do that. Some Boomer and Gen X parents still live in the fantasy fairy land of the “bootstraps” mantra to life, so they don’t really have a solid concept of what it’s actually like in the world these days.
