Im in a similar situation. Its just me and someone else and he doesnt really mentor me. I have to figure everything out myself and it is kind of stressful. I took a 13k paycut to for this job as well. It was my only offer and i still havent graduated yet. I got 5 months left. My plan is just to get 6 months of experience at this place for my resume and get another job once i graduate. I did it for a couple of years, and it worked for me since I learned and learned very fast. However, I will say that I did have some blindspots going into the next job where I was on a team with more experienced people. That aside, the biggest reason why I would not advise it is the stress. That first job took years off my life because I was working crazy hours, dealing with production issues in the middle of the night and there was no technical support. My team was willing to help in whatever way they could, but none of them (the PM, the support staff, the sales guys) could code. So, while they were all super nice folks who were willing to do whatever was asked of them, if I got stuck on a technical problem I had to get myself unstuck and that kind of stress combined with insane levels of sugar and caffeine are not good for the human body for extended periods of time.

EDIT: The sugar and caffeine were so I could just keep working. You can push yourself to pull a 20 hour day multiple days in a row with enough of those when you’re in your 20s, but you shouldn’t do it. Lol sounds awful. How is a new grad going to build a secure, production grade application, negotiate requirements and x,y,z? And, it would start with a Software Architect, Technical Project Manager, developer, not just a Jr developer… I’m not a dev – or that’s not my job title or primary duty – but I make a lot of internal tools these days. I wish there was someone I could work with or talk to. I learn a lot, figure a lot out for myself. But it also kinda sucks. I think it’s a really good way to learn how badly you can screw something up but still get it more or less working, and why it’s important not to do it that way. I’d advice any business owner against hiring a one-junior team to do their stuff. The thing will probably have to be rewritten three times and it will be a waste of time. I wasn’t the only dev, but I was working on two programs developing it on my own. I was basically my own architect, dev, and qa. I was also the only dev with prior experience as well, so generally by the time I had questions, I was on my own. The pitfall of this is that you may develop a working solution, but you won’t have anyone (that you’d want) to provide input that you’re making the best architecture decisions for the product involved. There will also be times where you need input on a particular area, but by being the only developer, you might not be able to ask outside the org (due to NDA reasons), so getting direct help won’t be an option.
