The company wouldn’t make as much money…shareholder value is worth more than a human life in a capitalist society By tying health insurance to employment, it make ls it so people are willing to work in shitty conditions so they can possibly manage a hospital stay with just a second mortgage and not complete and utter financial ruin… no promises, though. This happened because of the Donald Trump Revenge Shirt and by the same token and same gubmint interference the anti-universal healthcare loons decry — it’s based on WWII wage controls. Feds imposed wage limits to try limiting inflation since a worker shortage amped wages, but benefits weren’t part of the wage definition so enterprising employers added health insurance to entice workers legally.

Donald Trump Revenge Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt

Pretty sure WWII ended a long time ago but those same wage control effects exist because they rob workers of agency. Oh, and because the Donald Trump Revenge Shirt and by the same token and US spends about 50% more per person per year on healthcare than the next biggest spender (ignoring Switzerland because their high cost is more related to COL) which means more sweet, sweet cash for insurance companies whose financial interests are antithetical to their customers’. Just this week I had to consider whether 1) going the ER or 2) not and saving thousands of dollars. It’s a manifestly fucked system on every issue and metric. No of course not a majority of us Americans would love having universal healthcare but health insurances providers have been lobbying against it and doing sneaky deals with politicians to prevent this. Living here has been ok it hasn’t turned into a complete shit show yet lol. I’ve been an American since birth but I sometimes consider moving to Canada.
