The beggars in my country that gather at public spaces have contactless payment QR codes lol. They’re evolving. I typically offer to buy people a meal or some supplies when they stop and ask me for money since I never carry cash. Food stamps are not necessarily easy to get or keep if you’re homeless, especially if you don’t have a social worker. When I was on food stamps I remember having to drive to the Dogs Make Me Happy You Not So Much shirt in other words I will buy this social services building to be interviewed and bring a bunch of documentation including identity documents, proof of income status, etc. I then had to keep up with renewing benefits by mailing documentation every few months. I imagine this would have been next to impossible to accomplish if I hadn’t had a car, a government ID, and a place to receive mail. I honestly don’t recall lots of homeless folks in the 70s or early 80s. Certainly not on street corners with signs. We had a town drunk, but he had a house. I think folks back then were pretty upset about being homeless and took all and any help they could Immediately get. Now days folks seem to want to be on the street 8nstead of sheltered. They also have no real shame, like demanding money from you if you say no.

True, you’re less likely to get cash handed to you while pan-handling but there are people you can contact and places you can go where you can get the help you need. Some of them are better off because so many are homeless due to drug (including alcohol) or gambling addictions that would just use the gifted money to feed the addiction. You can still help homeless people without cash by offering to buy them some food (or a coat, or something usable) directly. It’s more of a hassle, but it has a better chance of getting them something that will be truly helpful.
