Yep! I was a strong competitive swimmer and a lifeguard. Went swimming with a friend at a beach that had a pier but no life rings or a lifeguard. She wasn’t a strong swimmer and wasn’t planning to go beyond wading, but she was out deep. I got to her while she was drowning. She was in full panic mode and tried to climb my body to get out of the water. She pushed me underwater so hard. If I wasn’t trained and a strong swimmer I think we both would have died that day. She wasn’t aware at all that she pushed me down. She was super apologetic though. I wasn’t upset that she’d pushed me down (it’s something I know isn’t intentional and that I knew how to deal with), but I was pissed that she went in deeper than she promised as she did not know how to swim properly despite telling me she did. She thought she would just float around the shallow area, but got in a current that took her to deeper waters Had I known her actually skill level, I wouldn’t have gone to that beach with her let alone leave her on her own. I was gone less than 3 minutes before I spotted her.

People panic and will claw with all their might to keep above the water line, even if it kills you both in the process I remember I was on a school camping trip with my dad. He was in a canoe with another dad that couldn’t swim. Their boat tipped over in the middle of the lake and I remember the other dad flailing around (I was in a different boat with a camp counselor). My dad stayed away from the other dad and just screamed for help. Fortunately the camp counselor was a life guard and jumped in to save the other dad. I asked my dad later why he didn’t help. He said not to help someone who is drowning and struggling unless you are trained to do so. If you don’t know what you are doing, the person drowning will take you down with him. The best thing you can do is try to find something that floats and push it towards them and yell for help. I don’t remember where i heard this, probably on some other forum, but they said that he had no other choice but to punch the other person, who was drowning, at the head hard, because they were being so difficult.
