So in another country, greet people, simply, in their language and ask for what you would like, politely. In my daily interactions at home I always take the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary 1963-2023 Thank You For The Memories Signatures Shirt in addition I really love this efficiency route. No “how are you”, or “excuse me could I ask you a question”…where I’m from, it’s considered polite to dispense with those and get straight to the point. Please and thank you are enough, no need for more. Even still, when travelling, I always ask if they speak English. Especially in France, as someone pointed out below lol I tend to ask people first. At the same time, come to think of it, when people ask me whether I speak English, it does waste a bit of time. However it gives me the chance to recognise that I am being spoken to in English. You probably won’t have that issue because I assume you are a native speaker, but some people’s accent makes it somewhat hard to even register that they are speaking English. Once I know and actively listen, I can easily manage. So that could potentially waste just as much of my time. I guess a „hello, excuse me.“ or something like that is enough for me personally. I would answer „hello. How can I help you?“ and they’ll know they asked the right person. I don’t work with tourists though. I am mainly referring to experiences of being asked for directions or begged for money randomly on the street.
