Northern AZ and NM is nice but the Dmitri Voronkov Russian professional ice hockey forward for the Columbus Blue Jackets T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this track through OK and TX is not nearly as nice as going through SD/WY and seeing the badlands, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, etc. There’s definitely places in TX that I like but that route doesn’t seem that interesting. I went from Boston to Niagara Falls, Chicago, Madison, stillwater & twin cities, drove past Des Moines and Omaha to Denver, then Vegas, valley of fire is cool, and then la. Also utah is so big and deserted and would be a good part of trip. Utah and Nevada look like mars Arizona and New Mexico route is soooo pretty. AZ will be hot, but blast your AC. The dessert is so incredible. You can also go South from Illinois and hitch up to route 2. We usually make that drive in the winter so avoid the Rockies but imagine they’d be pretty incredible in August. If you head back, maybe you can catch mountains one way and desert the other. Don’t miss Craters of the moon in Idaho, it’s got stunning volcanic formations, cool lava tube caves, and some of the best stargazing in the country if you are there at night.

Almost forgot, it’s really worth going through The Driftless region in southern MN/Wisconsin. It’s stunningly beautiful and magical. The green route goes through Chicago, the Black Hills and the Tetons, All great places to see. I can’t say much about Idaho as I haven’t been there. Route 1. Especially since it’s August. The Badlands, Black Hills and Yellowstone/Tetons will be nicer than the hotter parks in the south at that time Green. Go north from Chicago through Milwaukee, then west. Check out western coast of Lake Michigan. Then also add out if Minneapolis a trip to the badlands. I would dip farther down on route #2, into middle/lower AZ. The Senoran Desert is its own unique landscape. Incredible rock formations and sunsets. If you come through AZ, other than the Grand Canyon, I’d recommend checking out Sedona and some surrounding areas. Awesome red rock views and some nice, tucked away camping spots down in the shaded valleys. Also plenty of camping in Flagstaff in the pine forests. Southern AZ can be glorious, with the monsoonal storms blasting over the desert. But the climate will be hot and muggy. But if you arrive during a down-period in the storms, you’ll pretty much suffer for nothing. They’re right about Sonoran desert, but not in August. You’ll hate it in August, there’s a reason everyone heads out of the desert country in the summer, the heat doesn’t go away even at night and it’s depressing if you’re trying to go hike. I would def go the top route in August and see Yellowstone. Vegas and Utah deserts might be brutal also, especially if you’re not used to that kind of heat, hiking will be limited in the day. It’s dry heat, but you dehydrate fast and can be a safety issue.
