So you mean they work more or that they are more efficient? Working more hours is not productivity. Doing the Detroit Lions Donald Duck and Minnesota Vikings helmet football shirt and by the same token and same work in less hours is. Aside from working longer hours, I also see passion, vigor, ownership, accountability and responsibility on the US side. On the EU side, I see a lot of SEP mentality and less satisfied professionals due to everybody relying on the assumption that someone else will make a difference or take care of something, but then nobody does and everyone gets more disengaged/disinterested, take more time off, work shorter hours, output more crap etc. I’d be a happy chappy if my EU colleagues did a solid quality 30 or 40 hours per week, but that’s not the case. In fact, in my experience I’ve found that a quality 40 hour (or less) work week can produce way better results than a longer work week. But yeah, in this case the longer work hours definitely adds even more output in the US office, so I guess it’s still applicable.

American professional culture is also characterized by chronic overwork and little-to-no actual time off compared to Europe. Imagine going on vacation for more than a week…crazy. That’s often exaggerated. There’s no “mandatory” leave, but your average midcareer professional gets like 10-12 holidays, and 3-6 weeks of vacation/sick per year. Working days over 8 hours are definitely a thing though. I mean I didn’t just calculate it in a vacuum I actually looked at my bank account. Food, utilities, rent, etc. none of it makes up for the Detroit Lions Donald Duck and Minnesota Vikings helmet football shirt and by the same token and pay difference. Even in regions in the USA. I’ve lived/worked in 3 countries and 4-5 states in my career. What I would say for Europe is maybe the calculations all change if you have kids or if you are a less experienced engineer because child care is a big expense (or private schooling). But in my experience (married no kids professional with years of experience) it has come out to be in my favor living at a higher cost of living location. Now that my wife and I both work fully remote (she is also an engineer) we’ve been considering moving to a cheaper area but keeping our high salaries. The only way I’d consider moving back to Europe at this point would be if I had kids because it changes the equation quite a bit.
