I’ve got the same thing with my immediate neighbours and it’s great for sharing overabundance from the garden, looking out for each other with storm damage and the like, or when you are in the middle of cooking and realise you need an onion.

This is so weird. I was just thinking today of how in my distant Scottish past, neighbours would knock on the door and ask for this. We lived in an impoverished and poorly planned estate, with shops half a mile away – it was a regular thing – and reciprocal! I’ve asked for cups of sugar; I’ve also knocked at random neighbours’ house to let them know they’d left their car lights on when I was about 6-7. Yes, I used to live next door to twi friends on both sides. Suger and other things got passed around all the time as well as daily cups of tea in each others houses. I was just lucky that I moved into a house opposite my future best friend and an old friend moved in next door. I was in my late 20s and one of my oldest friends parents moved into the next street from me. Next time he was home and staying there I popped in on the way to the pub. I guess she was really asking why I hadn’t popped in for a cuppa, but honestly would you go and visit your friends parents – even if you have known them since you were a kid?!

I’m a student and I offer my neighbours milk and stuff because I only ever use it for rare occasions of baking and won’t finish the rest + I know students are struggling lol My neighbour literally brought an empty mug to our door and asked for a cup of sugar the other day. I swear to God. We laughed for minutes This woman at my work does. I know because she (pointlessly) tells us about it at length in our (pointless) morning meetings. I know the life story of all her neighbours but they seem less annoying than she is. Yes,I sent sugar, eggs & flour to my neighbors on different days over different years. We lived across the way for several years I once asked my neighbour to borrow his Mrs for 10 minutes, his response was to keep her as she’s a pain in the arse. I only needed her help with putting together my daughter’s bedroom as I wanted it to look girly for her. The neighbour was bitterly disappointed when I returned his angry wife to him, apparently he was in the dog house for being a prick to her. They are now divorced, I think the final straw was when she asked him if her new dress made her look fat and he thought it was funny to say no it’s your arse and stomach that makes you look fat.

We once asked our neighbour if we could borrow a can opener. Yes, our street was known for very low income, so it was normal for the parents to ask their kids to go around to the neighbours and ‘borrow’ bits, sugar, teabags, bread, milk etc. My personal favourite is toilet roll, kid comes “mum says can she have some toilet roll” kid proceeds to continue to watch tv for an hour with me then decides that they better go home because mum was waiting for it on the toilet. When everyone had very little, they were happy to share and help each other out where they could, now all grown up and in a much better situation, i’m in an area where nobody talks to each other and god forbid if the amazon driver posts your package at a neighbours house.
US-based person here, but, yeah, I’ve bothered both neighbors for sugar, eggs, spices, etc. And reciprocated when they asked the Derrick Henry an American football running back College Vintage T-Shirt Furthermore, I will do this same. It’s quite a bit faster than getting to the nearest grocery store when you realize half way through making dinner that you are out of coriander. We feel very fortunate to have such lovely neighbors. Our biggest fear of moving is that we would end up with bad neighbors. My friends have given me eggs from their chickens, and I give a lot of people different types and flavours of tea because I’m a big tea drinker. Got a mug of milk for my cereal from one neighbour, and a clove of garlic for my spag bol from another. Good neighbours who you can ask for a favour are invaluable Over the years I’ve asked my neighbours for a shower (got locked out after a run), a large cardboard box to return something and to borrow their outdoor brush to sweep my path occasionally as I have nowhere to store one. I’ve never asked for food items though.
