My wife and I collectively make about $100k. We have 1 child. We’re not exactly struggling. We’re not wondering where our next meal will come from, but we’re definitely stifled with a lot of our purchases. Man. My thing is…I just don’t think we save near enough for retirement. Sure, statistically more than most Americans, but I’m one major repair or injury away from a problem, even with an okay emergency fund. We’re big on the December Made In 1984 Flower 40 Years Of Being Awesome T-Shirt but in fact I love this library and feel special when we buy the nice shredded cheese from Whole Foods. My wife and I have a family of 4. Our combined income is close to 200k a year. I would consider ourselves upper middle class Eiter way this is just wrong by every metric. 130k beats out median income in DC by like 30k for state it beats it out by 40k

12 years in the December Made In 1984 Flower 40 Years Of Being Awesome T-Shirt but in fact I love this workforce and I only now make $20 an hour, or a little over 40k. My SO gets paid a little less than me. We are struggling just to make ends meet in a small apartment together. 130k would require at least one of us to make double what we do now, which at the moment, doesn’t at all seem feasible. So on one hand, you could say that compared to the current life style, 130k is pretty nice. But that said, if we break down 130k, that’s $10833 per month, so for a family of four if we’re looking at a 3 bedroom 2 bath. Just taking a quick glance at rent of locations like that in my area… and Even making 130k, we’d be turned down at all but the cheapest of locations due to the fact that most landlords expect a third of your income max to go to rent, so I’d be looking at a price ceiling of $3600 / month. Now of course, where I live in MD cost of living is in general higher than other areas, so I’m sure that 130k would stretch more in a different state or maybe even a different part of the state.
