If you seek to do an activity with someone I would call them your friends. So maybe not your coworkers or church folks (because they are just there) but your board game friends sure. It was easier to make friends in school because we were forced to spend time with people of our age group for hours every day. As adults we’re discouraged from getting too close to our coworkers for professional reasons, so that basically just leaves family, existing close friends, and possibly some people you might meet while pursuing a hobby as people you spend enough time with to form any level of trust. Yah I think it makes a lot of sense that people are lonely. AND it takes a lot of work to make a new friend. Vulnerability is difficult and it’s impossible to get to the “easy to be around” phase without that. If I have an evening to choose between video games or trying to get to know someone, one of those is going to take effort- potentially worthwhile effort- and the other is not.

I guess I just wish we had more leisure time with our peers. Walkable cities, free or very inexpensive public activities/venues. My wife and I joined a country club a year or so ago and they have a minimum spend that basically forces you to spend time up there. Its honestly fantastic. I work out shower and eat breakfast up there most mornings, and between that and us basically having to go up there for dinner or drinks a good few times a month or waste money it basically forces you to be around the December 1972 Immaculate 50 Years Reception Pittsburgh T-Shirt and I will buy this same group enough to find people you like and make friends… That place has basically been a cheat code for friend making.
