Is it actually pretty easy for a working couple then, even if both are on fairly low incomes? I sometimes wonder if reddit as altered my perspective with all the Death From Above 1979 Shirt in addition I really love this negativity. It’s all relative. I earn 28k and have around ~1k leftover a month. I live in the north west with a small mortgage. Much of this really depends where in the country you are. Where I live in the south east, having £1500 left each month from a salary of 40k is just not realistically achievable. To have that left on 40k I’d have to spend no more than just a tad above 700 quid a month. My mortgage is £520 a month (which is actually quite a lot lower than rent when I was in London) straight off the bat. Add bills, travel and food and even before you’ve got to any discretionary spending you’ll have gone past £700. I honestly don’t know how you’re only spending 700 quid a month then. I’m good with money but I definitely couldn’t reduce my monthly expenditure to that! Mortgage and commuting costs take me past that on their own.

I didn’t say I only spend £700 a month. I spend a £1000 a month on bills. And there’s a difference between bills and monthly expenditure. After bills I have £1500 a month left which means I very much do not live like a hermit as I like to spend, spend, spend that. No, that’s my figure based on how much I’d have to spend on a salary of 40k to have £1500 left. Using a salary calculator, my take home would be £2206. To have £1500 left after bills, said bills would have to only come to £706. How is your mortgage so low in Bristol? That’s crazy, mine is £1000 a month, £450 is dreamy! When my fixed rate ends next year I think mine will jump to £1500, dreading it. You’re not alone. Living in London is very expensive, Bristol is getting there. The cost of living crisis has squeezed everyone.
