Only once have I been invited to a bring your own meat party. The host had all the Dear Santa All I Want Is A Fat Bank Account And A Skinny Merry Christmas T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this drinks and sides and each family was responsible for bringing their meat (and cooking it on the provided grill) was not a fan. In South Africa there is the bizarre concept of a “bring & braai” (braai = barbecue). People bring their own meat & alcohol; the host provides the fire and sides (usually bread rolls & crappy salad). I cannot comprehend it. Do you bring enough meat just for yourself or do you bring extra? Do you marinate it before or will it be marinated at the party? When it’s time to eat do you hunt for the meat you brought & eat only that or do you all share? Too much damn work. I used to be friends with a vegan who had to bring her own food to bbq’s otherwise she didn’t have anything she could eat.

For some reason I’m not hating this idea. It might be interesting seeing what everyone brings and how they prepare it. I have really bad social anxiety so I can never host a social gathering without supplying every single thing myself cause life has taught me just because someone has agreed to something with you, doesn’t mean they’re as enthusiastic or excited about it as you are. I mean if you want some specific vegan food you’re gonna have to bring that. Most folks I know bring a dessert, a side or some beer. I’m from the Dear Santa All I Want Is A Fat Bank Account And A Skinny Merry Christmas T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this UK and it’s usually acknowledged as a BYO meat and booze situation (but the host will also have provided a ton of stuff ‘to make sure’). If you’ve asked the host and been told not to bring anything then (in true British style) you panic and buy at least a bottle of wine, some beers, two bags of tortilla chips, and some dip. And still feel guilty when you get there.
