Counterpoint – I am a middle school teacher. I am a young-looking 30-something and I teach math and ELL in a school with lots of first- and second-gen Mexican/Central American students. I am consistently trying to teach my students the David Cone American Baseball MlB in New York Yankees T-Shirt In addition,I will do this best practices of English language and I aim to do so in a way that teaches them practical, useful English – and in a way that avoids compliance as an indicator of success. One of the methods I employ with my EL students is code-switching. I make sure they know that there are times to be formal and times to be casual. I also firmly believe that in my own life – I call it my “Grandma Switch.” I love language and all its iterations and that includes new slang. As much as I teach my students new vocabulary to add to their formal lexicon, they share slang with me and celebrate with me when I use new slang words correctly and in a way that meshes to the context. I return that enthusiasm to them when they accurately and effectively use a new word or formal structure. It’s not all cringe and it’s not all trying to “be in with the kids.” It’s simply demonstrating to them that language is complex and there’s room for all kinds of it. I find this pedagogy much more effective than the prescriptivistism that my cohort dealt with in school.

I mean a teacher shouldn’t say that, but I think he wanted to say this, but his mind slipped and just went with casual racism The ONLY thing i can think is he meant to say it with an “a” at the David Cone American Baseball MlB in New York Yankees T-Shirt In addition,I will do this end to be goofy, maybe he thought he was cool with those kids. Doesn’t make it cool for him to use it that way EITHER, but i cannot fathom any other ending to that sentence. Idk though, maybe that guy can explain what he meant to say and why that word “slipped” instead.
