Idk if anyone will agree with this, but I’d say hand shaking. I guess the salute was to shield one’s face better from the sun to look at the other soldier’s face. The salute in the military comes from a period when knights had to raise their helms’ visor to show their identity. Visor and helmets are long gone but the gesture remained.
