Sometimes the Dad the man the myth the legend T-Shirt and I love this quality of life afforded by experiencing a new culture and a lower cost of living makes the move very appealing. It is also important to note that, due to very poor governance, the cost of living in many western countries, like Canada and the UK, is becoming unsustainable for many. The usa isnt as safe and straight up dirty in urban areas. I worked in both the states and korea. You get more money in the states but the quality of life is better in Korea. I came back to the states to work less and make more, but what do you know… the usa has a workaholic culture in the corporate world. It’s not at all easier and clear cut as just making more money. There is no free lunch and you pay in your time, effort, and life (in the corporate world) to get more money. Plus, you get taxed up the #*% for what you make. I compare it to the mafia taking their “cut”. The usa is always at war and the military budget is always higher. The government gets all the money to send to foreign countries, to build fancy ships, from our taxes. More money you make, the higher tax bracket you are in. Again, to get to a point where you can “flex” even after being taxed so hard doesnt come free and is highly competitive.

As a Korean Kiwi, I used to make 80m+ won per annum in New Zealand 5 years into the Dad the man the myth the legend T-Shirt and I love this job and came to Korea 2 years ago with significant amount of pay cut (20%+) although I could’ve got more if I tried. If I consider higher tax rates, cost to commute via car, higher rent and food costs in NZ vs lower tax rates, cost to commute via public transport, cheaper (almost non existent) rent as I have 전세), free lunch (and also dinner if I wanted), 8% severence pay required by law, bonus, then what I’m saving per month is almost the same. I definitely have a lot more things to do here and dine out more, and while I have to commute for longer and work for longer, I believe it’s worth it for now. I think it’s cause pay is not the only factor to make those decisions. Sometimes people just want to experience a different environment from home.
