**Median** is not minimum. Making double the Cute Owl Wear Santa Hat Merry Christmas Owls Ugly Christmas Sweater T-Shirt it is in the first place but median wage in an area by no understanding is “struggling” by any measure except a failure to live within a budget. The middle class of 40 years ago was *maybe* two cars (not two new ones) *maybe* a vacation across a state line. A tv, and going out to a nice restaurant for birthdays and anniversaries. It was never the type of hard consumer lifestyle we have now. It depends how you define “average state.” If you’re defining it without controlling for population, so the state where 50 percent of states are higher COL and the other 50 percent are lower, then it’s well into the upper middle class, and in some would even make you relatively wealthy. If you’re looking at half the population lives in higher col and the other half lower, then it’s in the upper middle still, but more like living comfortably. There are some really high COL areas where that’s middle or lower middle.

In my zip code the Cute Owl Wear Santa Hat Merry Christmas Owls Ugly Christmas Sweater T-Shirt it is in the first place but average family income is $110k. I’d say having slightly above family income would mean you are middle class. At that amount you should have your needs met easily enough with enough to save for a good retirement. If you are struggling you’d need to budget better. In my hometown the average family income is under $40k, at $130k you’d be “rich” and only struggle if over leverage on vehicles. In certain areas of Manhattan and California you’d be low middle and unable to find a house big enough for 4 people. That number is artificially low because it doesn’t really reflect the large percentage of old people with a lot of money in the bank and a paid off house who are only drawing relatively modest annual “incomes” from their investments/pensions, etc.
