All SLPs will have some training in the area, myologists just specialize in it.

My personal experience is that it’s a mixture of sensory issues and, subsequently, food anxiety. No pressure to finish anything, just a bite to see if we liked it or not. Also, teach your kid to cook from a relatively young age. The best way to eat healthy enough while experiencing food anxiety is to cook for yourself—there’s so many vegetables I can’t eat normally, but I will in particular recipes provided I prepare it myself. It’s a lot harder to be anxious about your food when it’s your own labor—it’s much more trustworthy.

The store we were at had free pizza samples that day, so she said if I tasted one and still didn’t like it I could pick a non pizza food to eat. Surprise, I loved it. She also introduced me to fried green beans, Chinese food, croquettes, various squash dishes, random stuff. Some were a success, some not so much (can’t do squash, not sure why). When there’s no pressure, it’s a lot easier to give something a taste. Also no judgment. Former brother in law insisted I put refried beans on my soft taco, I used the tiniest bit I could get away with. Projectile vomited as soon as it touched my tongue. He called me dramatic and acted like I was faking it. I will probably never give any form of beans a chance again.

I’m autistic and have extreme food issues, I don’t think its ARFID, but I’ve never talked to a professional about it. It’s so mentally exhausting worrying about whether a group event will have food that my brain and body will let me eat. I can’t imagine having it worse.

This is why I can’t eat certain fruits unless they’ve been cooked. The sensation of something popping in my mouth is revolting. (Same for boba.) I wonder about this because I’m a fairly rare person who hates cheese, as in all cheese, all dairy really including cream cheese, milk, makes me gag, including the smell, look, touch, even taste when I forced myself to eat it (and promptly spit out). Like I need to plug my nose going by a cheese section in a grocery store. I have no idea where it came from but I’ve been this way way back to my first memories of grilled cheese and cottage cheese just absolutely NO from me to the point I couldn’t (and still) won’t eat off a plate that has had cheese on it or something like picking cheese off salad still means I won’t eat it. It’s like asking me to eat old dirty underwear dipped in summer dumpster juice. My reaction is anxiety and then nausea until I get it away from me. Needless to say, my whole life has been people on and off testing or pushing me or even teasing like people smacking my cheeks with American cheese slices. Part of this is why I love Japanese food because the chances of hidden cheese is almost or completely nil. I need a cheese-free zone!
