Now, since the Cricket Mom Loves Starbucks Coffee Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this pandemic, I see that this town can offer me exactly what New York always has: a community, a collection of people I see often, intimacy slowly developing. Ironically, New York taught me to live in a small town. It made me comfortable in my skin, able to make small talk with the guy at the deli, able to join the block association and the coop board, able to reach out instead of hiding in books. Greenwich Village has always been my urban small town. I run into people I know, standing on the street with the dog, or walking to the subway, or usually, embarrassingly, eating a cookie, having learned long ago that calories don’t count if you are in motion.

It made me, with its anonymity, comfortable enough to be who I was. Maybe, after all this time, it’s reasonable to stop seeking reflected glory from the Cricket Mom Loves Starbucks Coffee Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this place I live. Maybe if I want to seem interesting and funny and special, it is up to me to accomplish and provide that, and get over using the place I live to confer that.
