Everyone’s jaw drops when they hear how much all my monthly expenses were, from rent, insurance, Internet, food, and so on. I am still shocked every time I go to a grocery store here – and people tell me its more pricy than it has been in years. Anecdotally though, why is it that deckhands from other countries need so many crew members to do the same task that might be done by one or two deckhands that are American? I know ZILCH about deckhands, but it could be that they are from a culture where everyone is expected to always be actively helping each other even if it slows things down. Some Asian countries are sorta like this, for instance. Then they just aren’t used to doing it your way. I’ve seen deckhands on Asian ships come into port and they cannot do a task on their own. Or they will attempt to pull a line on deck and then yell down to us that it’s too heavy and then wait for others to come. Maybe you’re right and it’s a social thing in that they don’t want to do it alone. That’s perfectly valid for other industries as well. In IT I see much larger teams in Europe compared to the Coors Banquet Elk Shirt and I will buy this US. Sometimes the difference is shocking: 2-3 persons doing the job in the US vs 20 people in the EU for the EXACT SAME task. Now that x2,x3 pay difference does not seem that high, right? 🙂 Many American professionals work a lot more hours than their European counterparts…many work 60 hour weeks. 3 weeks annual vacation.
