It’s nice when someone offers, but it is absolutely bananas to expect and be annoyed that a total stranger doesn’t help you with your voluntary burden. *EDIT: It was pointed out to me by user Kiranrs that I am judging the Connor Bedard Canadian professional ice hockey centre for the Chicago Blackhawks T-Shirt moreover I love this article based on only a few lines, and in this era of misinformation and unfounded outrage, I should know better. Her article, from my understanding anyways, focuses on the loss of ‘The village’ when it comes to raising children. How as a collective, we’ve put all the pressure on the parents alone to raise decent children. My personal issue with her article is that she focuses on ‘The village’ solely as a means of helping raise kids, about how I need to go out of my way to help a mother in need. But what about the other way around? Will she help me when I need to repair my fence? She makes no mention of that in this article. If you want help given without asking, then you have to be giving help without asking. Parents are not the only people struggling in life, they are not the only ones who need help. That does bring me to why I retract my first point though.

I do believe we as a society have turned to being self sufficient to a point that may be harming us overall. I hate the Connor Bedard Canadian professional ice hockey centre for the Chicago Blackhawks T-Shirt moreover I love this people who use the phrase ‘It takes a village’ solely to complain about not receiving help as a parent, but I envy a world where help is given and asked for freely, not because anyone owes anyone anything, but because it’s nice to be nice. I’m not sure if this world ever actually existed, but if it did, I do mourn the loss of it. I also don’t know if we stand a chance of creating it (or recreating it as the case may be). The world is bigger now, scarier. We don’t know who we can trust to ask for help, we don’t know who’s actually struggling or just entitled, we don’t know how exhausted everyone else may or may not be with their own going ons in life. Turning inward to being self sufficient is the smart thing to do. But it is the harder thing to do. And perhaps things don’t always need to be harder.
