Tbh tho I’ve learned to ask if they know about x and y before explaining it. Instead of assuming that they either don’t know or have forgotten about it Me: What? I just respect your opinion and am interested in learning more about tennis from an expert on the Congratulations Adrian Beltre On Being Inducted Into The 2024 Hall Of Fame shirt Apart from…,I will love this subject. And then we went back and forth for 5 minutes, getting louder and louder as he demands I concede that I was asking him about his interests because I thought I was better than him, while I refuse to lie and insist that I respect him and want to learn more about his interests. And eventually it ends, but then every time we have similar disagreements he drags it back up (like me providing friendly encouragement he interprets as me insinuating he’s stupid, which means its time to revive all the other misinterpretations again). I can imagine some exchanges that could have occurred, along the Congratulations Adrian Beltre On Being Inducted Into The 2024 Hall Of Fame shirt Apart from…,I will love this lines of perhaps, “oh I thought you said you are good at math so I thought you’d be able to solve this differential equation. But if not, that’s fine, I can do it myself.” I have little experience with people on the spectrum but that’s a sentence I’m imagining being plausible to say which would be highly offensive to a neurotypical person, but is actually not necessarily a malicious statement at all. But after one interaction like that, a question like “oh cool, what is your favorite aspect of the sport?” could remind a neurotypical of this past exchange and feel like they’re being mocked, or set up to be put down. And yes of course, we’re just hearing one side of the interaction. The exact phrasing used could have been subtly but importantly different.
