It’s an old rule. Back when phones were analog, they had a tiny chance that they could send out signals that caused interference… So they just said, nah, just get em all shut down. The theory is baloney for one simple reason: if cell phones caused problems, there would have been many crashes by now. I haven’t been on a flight where I didn’t see a cell phone turned ON.
