I just had to turn down a job I really would’ve loved with potential for growth in an area I’m passionate about because the Cliffhanger by Sylvester Stallone Movie T-Shirt and by the same token and wages in that industry have NOT caught up with cost of living or the new normal of rental income standards. On the wage they were offering (just under $16, which is sadly not unusual even with experience or licenses in the veterinary/animal care industry – unless you’re the actual vet or the practice manager or high up in shelter admin, you’re making scraps), I wouldn’t have been able to even qualify for the vast majority of one bedroom apartments in the city, much less one anywhere near my workplace. I’m a woman living alone, so I have to consider that as well – I’ve had some scary situations in the past not just from being in a bad area, but from the liberties that slumlords and their property managers will take if they think you don’t have anywhere else to go… It’s not something I want to deal with again.

I don’t see how anyone could accept that offer unless they had a roommate or partner with a much better paying job, tbh. The norm here is that you need to prove good credit AND at least 3x rent in monthly income, and being able to have a co-signer is becoming less and less of a common option. Most one-bedrooms are 950-1k at absolute minimum unless they’re on the Cliffhanger by Sylvester Stallone Movie T-Shirt and by the same token and far outskirts of the city and/or total slumlord situations. So instead I’m taking some work from home call center job that pays $21/hr and has great benefits. I’m not passionate about it, but I’ll be able to at least qualify for a roof over my head. To my mom’s credit, as soon as she got over the initial shock to the system when I explained why I’ve turned down a few offers from places I’d love to work – she’s mostly just angry now. Not at me, but at employers and landlords for creating this situation. Housing is just exploding and Boomers are eating it up. My parents basically see their home as a big retirement pot. My SIL was bragging how her house has doubled in value, from $250k to $500k in less than 10 years. Doubling their investment simply because they were born earlier and had a chunk of cash for down payment… notably a much smaller chunk than you’d need to buy a house today. There’s simply no such thing as a fine little starter home anymore. Busted trailers are going for $250k in their area. They know full well on some level that it can’t be a good thing to have Millennials and Gen Z totally priced out of the housing market, but they’re all just too happy to gloat sit on their ‘investment earnings.’
