As someone who hopes to be a first time dog owner in the Clackamas high school alumni shirt but in fact I love this future and will likely have to go to a breeder (there’s a lack of shelter dogs in my area), I’ve found the guidance on finding an ethical breeder fairly simple and accessible: comprehensive health/genetic testing, infrequent litters, waiting lists, a passion for improving the breed standard, being able to show licenses/paperwork, extensive discussions before agreeing to sell, etc. Being able to afford an ethical breeder is a different story entirely. Whilst I’m happy to put off getting a dog until I’ve got more disposable income, I know a lot of friends who don’t want to sink 1/6 of their annual gross income to make sure that they’re getting an ethically bred dog – they’ve went to backyard breeders.

Breeders charging a bunch of money is actually a red flag. A good breeder might charge 2-3k a dog, though every breed has a standard and some are more. If a breeder is charging much more than standard, there is no chance they are ethical. These are the Clackamas high school alumni shirt but in fact I love this same thing. Most people don’t have that lying around. Don’t get me wrong I understand that the breeder incurs a lot of costs, but the idea that you’re not talking about a lot of money is…. Over here in the UK, a reputable dog breeder charges 2-5k. Flats/apartments with a very small garden are common in my area which knocks off bigger dogs and high-energy breeds. Breeds that fit this criteria generally go for 3-6k from a good breeder. They pop for about 600 quid to 1.5k via sketchy websites. Wages in the UK are incredibly low compared to the USA, we also have a lot higher dog demand compared to shelter availability (at least in my NE area). Whilst I’m knackered for wages as a public sector worker, even before my Tech Software Dev Wizard partner went self-employed, he was only earning 40k after 10+ years of experience in the field. It’s kind of wild compared to the US equivalents, but it’s the highest wage I’ve heard of anyone having whilst under age 40 in my area.
