Cicada Brood X is the larger of the two broods, and its invasion will span multiple states in the eastern United States. From Tennessee to New Jersey and from Indiana to Georgia, communities across the region will witness the emergence of these insects in unprecedented numbers. Experts predict that the peak of Brood X’s emergence will occur in May and June of 2024.

Cicada Brood XIII is a smaller brood that will emerge in portions of the Midwest, primarily in Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, and parts of Kentucky and Tennessee. While not as widespread as Brood X, Brood XIII is still expected to produce a significant invasion, providing opportunities for observation and appreciation of these fascinating creatures.

About this Cicada Map 2024 Cicada Brood Xix Xiii Invasion Tour USa Flag T-Shirt

Cicadas spend the vast majority of their lives underground as nymphs, feeding on tree roots. After 17 years of development, they emerge as adults in late spring or early summer. Once above ground, the males sing loudly to attract mates, creating a chorus that can be deafening at times. After mating, the females lay eggs in tree branches, and the cycle begins anew.
Cicadas play a vital role in the ecosystem. Their emergence provides a significant food source for birds, reptiles, and other animals. The insects also contribute to soil aeration and nutrient cycling. Additionally, the emergence of cicadas coincides with the flowering of many tree species, ensuring the pollination of these plants.
As the Cicada Map 2024 indicates the approach of the cicada invasion, individuals can take steps to prepare for the experience. While cicadas are generally harmless to humans, their loud singing and large numbers can be startling or annoying. Those sensitive to noise may want to consider wearing earplugs or headphones when outdoors during the peak of the invasion. Similarly, those who dislike insects may want to avoid areas where cicadas are particularly abundant.
